The Former Numata Family Samurai Residence is located in the centre of Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. In the latter half of the Edo Period, this was a residence of the Numata Family, chief counselors for the Ichinoseki clan. This valuable building represents about 300 years of history and is immaculately maintained in true Samurai fashion. The house features typical Edo Period architecture, a beautiful Japanese garden and gives visitors a glimpse of the life of a Samurai during the Edo Period. The house is located about 10 minutes walk from JR Ichinoseki Station and there is an Ichinoseki local who will happily guide you around the house, explaining, in Japanese, each feature and history behind the Numata family. The house is open daily from 10:00 ~ 16:00, admission is free.

It's a lovely house and so beautifully preserved. Our visit was followed by a stop for beer at Seki no Ichi, the brewery a few steps away. Ichinoseki has quite a few great places right around the station.
