Stormy Skies over Kawaguchi-ko

A grey day at the foot of Fujisan

Seas of lavender at the annual Fujikawaguchiko Herb Festival

Bright flowers, dark skies

Some sunlight pierced the clouds

The Herb Festival was popular despite the somewhat foreboding sky

Walkways around the river, passing through the gardens that line the shore

Gaps in the greenery where the walkways border the lake

The blue hydrangeas are bright, despite the lack of sun

Colour is still provided by the summer leaves around Kawaguchi-ko

A tree by the roadside

A dead tree under the heavy clouds

Despite the dark skies, Lake Kawaguchi still glistens

A bridge where the water snakes inland

At the slightest hint of sunshine, the locals and tourists sit by the picturesque lakeside

Shadow and sunlight on the water

The shores of Lake Kawaguchi are generally known as a perfect vantage point for viewing Mount Fuji, and this is usually the case. On some days, however, clouds roll over the lake and obscure Fujisan from view. Dark clouds and rumbling rolls of thunder make for a dramatic day by the otherwise peaceful lake.

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments. It was a great day to take photos - my personal favourite is the second one along, with the lone fisherman. At that point, he was the only one on the lake!
