There seems to be many shrines named Hachiman around Japan, and Kofu has at least two. This Hachiman Shrine is smaller and much less grand than nearby Takeda Shrine, but a large area of trees and huge tumbled rocks behind the shrine, and rampant summer growth around the buildings add a sense of mystery and wildness to this shrine in Kofu. I loved the roof shapes of the smaller buildings, and I also liked the pond.

Summer growth surrounds the shrine

The shrine's bell rope

Shallow pond with flat slab bridge

Shrine building with roller doors!

Stone guardian next to the ema stand

The chain is Japan's attractive version of a downspout - rain water simply tricks down the chain!

Small building in the trees behind the main building

I love the graceful roof shape

Back of the main hall

Wooden sliding doors

Stone lanterns
