Fishing village harbors are in the eye of the beholder. Here are just a few things I found interesting in this treasure-trove of maritime culture, besides the salty sea air, sounds of the seagulls, and the pretty houses overlooking the marina. You won’t see any restaurants or hotels in this Tsunoshima seaport, so it’s still a real fishing village and not a resort. Rent a bike at Tsunoshima Cycle Port and explore the curvy, narrow paths, well-kept home gardens, and variety of fishing vessels in the calm of the port.

In the marina

Soak in the salty air

View facing the mainland; the Tsunoshima Bridge crosses the strait and Hato Island

Fishing with grandpa in the marina

I like the solid, matte colors and strong, simple shapes here

Through a storage shed

Back from a morning at sea; windmills stretch across the hills in the backdrop

No surfing, no swimming, no boating, no jet skiing; covering all the bases?

A pleasant spot for fishing

A fresh catch

Koinobori, or carp streamers, can be seen in spring in honor of Children's Day (May 5)

Floodlights on a squid boat; squid feed at night and are attracted by the lights
