There are numerous ritzy afternoon tea events held at hotels across Japan at any given time, but most of their menus include main dishes featuring meat or fish, plus desserts that incorporate butter, milk, and eggs – and obviously, this makes things difficult for those following a vegan diet. The Tokyo Marriott Hotel is remedying that, and will be hosting a fully vegan afternoon tea event from April 20th until May 31st 2022.
The innovative menu includes a wide variety of sweet treats plus several light savory dishes, and part of the goal behind the event was to utilize ingredients like plant milks, nuts, and soy meat to create flavors and textures that would leave even non-vegans surprised. The lineup includes items like a tiramisu made from soy milk, cookies made from rice flour, cupcakes topped with vegan buttercream frosting, and couscous and potato spiced savory cakes. There will also be bottomless tea and coffee available, and mocktails can be added for an additional ¥ 500.
The vegan afternoon tea is priced at ¥8,470 per head, and reservations can be made online via the Tokyo Marriott Hotel website – sittings are available from 10.30 am, 1 pm, or 3.30 pm daily. Do note that bookings must be made at least two days prior to your intended visit.
