Nagai house is one of the Edo period thatched roof houses that has been relocated and preserved in Yakushike Park in Machida. Unlike Ogino House, which was originally a clinic, Nagai House seems simpler, and more like a farm house. I could easily imagine it standing amid rice fields and orchards in some rural of Machida two hundred years ago.

In England it is a specific reed that is hollow in the middle. Is the thatching material we see a grass, a reed or a grain, perhaps. I would love to know. Thank you so much, Geraldine R.
I didn't know the answer to your question, so I did some research. Reeds are sometimes used for thatch in Japan. Also dwarf bamboo and occasionally rice straw, but the most common and durable material is pampas grass (susuki in Japanese). If you Google "Thatch in Japan" you will be able to find more information if you are interested.
