Takahata Isao Exhibition 2025

The man who planted Japanese animation

Venue
Azabudai Hills Gallery
When
Jun 27th - Sep 15th 2025

Azabudai Hills Gallery is set to present a major retrospective exhibition on Takahata Isao, one of Japan’s most influential animation directors and a co-founder of Studio Ghibli. Held in honor of the 90th anniversary of his birth, the event offers a comprehensive look at his life, creative vision, and lasting impact on Japanese animation.

Highlights include original cels and background art from some of his most iconic works, such as Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, and Heidi, Girl of the Alps. Among the rarest items on display is a layout sketch of the heavy cruiser Maya from Grave of the Fireflies, drawn by Hideaki Anno early in his career, along with a unique harmony cel based on the same design—both being shown to the public for the first time.

To enhance the viewing experience, visitors can opt for an audio guide narrated by media personality Hikaru Ijuin and veteran voice actress Sakiko Tamagawa. A specially curated playlist by filmmaker Shunji Iwai, known for his connection to Ghibli and Takahata’s work, is also available, offering a musical backdrop tailored to the exhibit.

Weekday visitors will receive a limited-edition gift—a collectible paper box featuring exclusive illustrations by manga artist Hisaichi Ishii, with a different design available each day. Additionally, special after-hours tours (an additional 600 JPY) led by a Studio Ghibli curator are available, providing a deeper look into the exhibition’s themes and production history.

Advance tickets are available online, and on the day tickets will be available at the venue—discounts of 200 JPY will also be offered to those presenting ticket stubs from the Ghibli 3D Sculpture Exhibition at Shinagawa's Warehouse Terrada.
