With a capacity of 40,000 seats and a roof that can be completely closed, the Oita Stadium was the venue for several games of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The dome has a total diameter of 245 meters.
The stadium was designed by the architect Kisho Kurokawa, who is also responsible for the striking design of the Toyota Stadium in Aichi Prefecture. The unofficial name "Big Eye" is very apt because the stadium is shaped like a large, upward-looking eye with a roof that can be opened and closed like an eyelid.
It is mainly used for football matches and is home to the J. League Club Oita Trinita, but rugby matches and concerts are also held here.
All eyes will be on Japan in 2019 as it prepares to be the first Asian nation to host the Rugby World Cup tournament.
