Located in Daigo-machi, just south of the Fukushima border, is a lovely 'retro' cafe. They serve three lunch sets each day. The sets, which cost between 1000 - 1200 yen, include salad, a drink and soup. They also have tasty desserts. On the day we visited they offered the choice of kabocha pudding cake or tomato mousse - 450 yen each, 800 for a 'set' with drink. The cafe is open from 11am to 8pm and is closed on Wednesdays.

Ibaraki's Daigo Cafe
Step back in time to dine

The entrance to the Daigo Cafe

The cafe is located on on one of Daigo-machi's main streets, a short walk from Hitachi Daigo Station.

Just inside the door is a small 'zakka' (knick-knack) shop.

The cafe is housed in a lovely traditional Japanese building.

Customers are free to read the cafe's selection of magazines.

The menu on the day we visited featured a delicious spinach pasta, 'curry rice', and a rolled cabbage and kabocha (pumpkin) dish.

The retro interior of the cafe is comfortable and inviting.

The owners of the cafe pay attention to detail.

The best seats in the cafe - a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

Daigo Town, when you spend time in it, reveals itself. I had the pleasure of caressing a lacquered floor in a vintage building, and dining on a veranda with a waterfall pouring down in front of my table. Ibaraki people are serious foodies. It's a great place for slow travel.
