Be sure to grab an umbrella before you enter Kabushima Shrine, regardless of the weather. Located 15 minutes walking from JR Same Station in Hachinohe, this Shinto shrine serves as the breeding ground for around forty thousand Black-tailed Gulls, or Umineko, and you will need that umbrella to protect yourself from the possibility of being splattered with seagull droppings. The birds start migrating to Kabushima Island (an island in name only – Kabushima was connected to the mainland about 60 years ago to make it more accessible) in early March, and remain there until the winter. The masses of seagulls are a sight to see.
