Kada Kaigetsu Onsen

Experiencing a seascape view at an onsen

The city of Wakayama is famous for its many onsen springing from the ground. There are numerous onsen in Wakayama City alone, and most of these are bicarbonate or chloride which give off a bitter or salty taste. This is due to the fact that Wakayama City faces the sea and is therefore surrounded by salt water. It is said that these onsen properties can be effective in curing ailments such as muscle pain, joint pain, neuralgia, dermatitis, and skin diseases. There are several types of onsen and each has its own respective therapeutical powers. On the other hand, there are also simple onsen where the water is colourless and transparent. It has no taste and no smell, and thus little chance of over stimulating the body.

While there are many onsen to choose from, I chanced upon this simple but practical onsen during my visit to Wakayama. Being a practical person myself, I never planned on trying one. But as I have read more and more things about Japan, and Wakayama being an interesting place to experience an onsen, I indulged my curiosity.

Kada Kaigetsu, formerly known as Hotel Seaside Azumiya, was the onsen that I chanced upon. It is a 5 minute walk away from Awashima Shrine. The hotel, while not a very fancy and elegant one, is definitely worth the visit. I was greeted with all smiles by the staff. Luckily, one staff spoke English and was very helpful. She assisted me to my destination and discussed all the guidelines and how-to’s.

The indoor bath was typical and simple with very few people coming in and out. From there, you can already see a view of the sea through the room’s moist windows. It was almost 5pm by the time I got to the outdoor spring bath, and that is where my money’s worth went. The beautiful seascape looks out on to the Kitan Strait. Some boats passed by and in the background were many sounds from the sea. I soaked in the hotspring for a few minutes just watching the scenery, waiting until I couldn't take the hot temperature anymore. Unfortunately, I did not stay to watch the sunset. Still, being able to relax after a long day in an unfamiliar place which offers a breathtaking view is a one of a kind experience.

I can safely say after this experience that an onsen is definitely a must-try in Japan. And better yet, choose an onsen with a view!

I've never tried onsen before. It will be next on my list when I visit Japan again.
