Vegan Guide to Shinjuku

Burgers, donuts and macrobiotic snacks

Shinjuku is one of the most frequented spots in Japan for both locals and tourists and is home to the busiest railway station in the world. Whether you're stopping by to view the Hanazono Shrine or for a stroll through Central Park, this hub has plenty of vegan offerings to complement your plans conveniently, affordably, and deliciously.

1. Ain Soph.Ripple Ripple is the fourth Ain Soph. restaurant to open, this one serving as casual dining in a cafe setting. Vegan burgers, Burritos, salads and French Toast are on the menu. The Ripple Cheeseburger topped with avocado is a popular crowd favourite and is amongst one of the best vegan burgers I've ever tried. Ain Soph.Journey is also located in Shinjuku and offers more of an upscale, casual-chic type of dining (reservations are required for this one).

2. Doughnut Plant - Lumine Est Contrary to what many would expect, vegan food isn't always positively correlated with 'healthy' food. But a little vegan junk food never hurt anyone—animals included! Enter Doughnut Plant. This donut counter has numerous locations across the city with this one found near Shinjuku station inside the Lumine Est shopping area. They stock a vegan variety of eggless donuts made from soy milk. Flavours include strawberry, green tea, and caramel, and some are seasonal. Portion sizes range from a smaller donut to generously sized larger ones to satisfy your sugar cravings.

3. MiseLMA [Permanently Closed] MiseLMA is a quirky little cafe that stocks delicious cheap vegan fare ranging from macrobiotic rice and vegetable dishes to vegan cat and fish shaped waffles. After noticing that vegan food had begun 'trending' at higher end prices in Japan, they wanted to provide cheaper, quality vegan food to enforce the idea that veganism is about a sustainable lifestyle instead of something 'trendy'. Their speciality, however, is in their drip coffee and tea selection. Once a month they host a tea tasting event and a reading club. Their creation of green tea is carefully selected, along with their orange juice, which is made from organic mandarins. Granola, cakes and sweets are also available. Located a bit off the beaten track along the eastern edge of Shinjuku.
