Ueno Park is a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing in Japan.

The area has about 1,200 cherry blossom trees and attracts many visitors during spring. About 400 years ago, the priest Tenkai brought cherry blossoms from Mt. Yoshino and planted them in the park, making it the most famous spot for cherry blossom viewing in Edo (the former name of Tokyo). The park is still a beloved spot for blossom viewing and was even celebrated in a haiku (short poem) by the acclaimed poet Matsuo Basho.

Typically, the Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival is held in Ueno Park from late March to early April. The actual dates of the festival depend on when the cherry blossoms bloom. During this celebratory event, you can enjoy music, parades, and picnicking, as well as the magical glow of 800 hanging lanterns at night.

Getting there

Ueno is located in the heart of Tokyo, so there are different subway lines that provide easy access to the park. It's about a three- to five-minute walk from Ueno Station.

Hello, how are you? What is the ideal date for seeing the cherry blossoms in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka? After full bloom, do they stay for about a week? So, would it be ideal to stay in Japan between a week before and a week after full bloom, or is it better to always arrive in the city before full bloom? Thanks, Lincoln.

Hi Lincoln. Thanks for reaching out. I'm doing well, and I hope you are too. At this time, it's difficult to predict the 2026 cherry blossom season, but in general, cherry blossoms are in bloom from late March to early April (Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka; though Kyoto and Osaka may be a little later). You are correct, after full bloom, cherry blossoms last for about another week (though rainfall can shorten this period). I recommend arriving just before full bloom. Typically, cherry blossoms look best a couple days before and after peak bloom. Though again, the season is hard to predict this far in advance. Let me know if you have any other questions!
