In the grid of quiet, narrow streets between Ueno and Asakusa, it seems that every time you turn a new corner, you come to another shrine or temple. A pleasant one is Myoon-ji, which has a peaceful atmosphere despite being surrounded by buildings and not shielded by a wall. The charming wooden hall is flanked by a moat-like carp pond, where large fish glide around uncaring of people and noise.

A small, charming Buddhist temple

There's this elegant bridge over the water

It's pretty open to the street

Lots of carp in the pond

One of the worship halls

A little side shrine

One of the big lanterns

The carp pond is like a moat around the hall

Surrounded by buildings but still peaceful

Another sturdy lantern

A view from the side

Banners of auspicious bright red
