About Okutama

Located on the western end of Tokyo, Okutama is a mountainous range that offers spectacular views for outdoor enthusiasts.

Lake Okutama, a vast body of water that stretches to Yamanashi Prefecture, is placed against the backdrop of Mount Ozen (1,405 m) and Mount Otake (1,267 m), two of the tallest mountains in Tokyo. In autumn, the area turns into a blazing hue of red, yellow, and orange to serve up a feast for the eyes.

Nearby, Mount Mitake is a popular hiking spot that has challenging trails for the more adventurous. With views of Tokyo, and as far as Nikko on clear days, this climb is tough but rewarding.

Beneath the surface are the Nippara Limestone Caves, the largest in Kanto. With a kaleidoscope of colours underground, the caves attract many visitors yearly. There, numerous stalactites and stalagmites jut out from the ceiling and floor to create an authentic cavern vibe.

Okutama is home to several onsen, one of which is Moegi-no-yu, where views of the Tama River valley can be enjoyed while enjoying a warm soak.

With several camping grounds available in the area, Okutama is a quick reprieve from the city and can be easily reached in a couple of hours from Tokyo's 23 wards.
