JR has announced that its JR Pass will be available for sale within Japan on a trial basis, from March 8 2017 until March 31 2018.
The JR Pass allows travel on almost all bullet trains throughout the country, as well as all other JR trains and its buses and ferries.
The Pass will still be for sale only to foreign travelers visiting Japan under the entry status of 'Temporary Visitor'. It won't be for sale to Japanese nationals, or to foreign residents in Japan.
For adults, the cost will be ¥33000 for the standard 7-day JR Pass, ¥52000 for 14 days, or ¥65000 for 21 days. Passes for children aged 6 to 11 cost half the price of the adults', while for a supplement of about 33% you can buy a Green Pass, which allows you to sit in the more spacious and comfortable 'Green Car' on each train.
Visitors will be able to buy the JR Pass at a number of airports and major stations around the country, including Narita, Haneda, New Chitose (Sapporo) and Kansai International Airports, and Tokyo, Shinjuku, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Hiroshima stations.
