2024 marks the 70th anniversary of Godzilla, and Godzilla THE Art Exhibition will be held at Tokyo's Mori Arts Center Gallery from late April to late June of 2025. The exhibition is set to explore the ever-evolving interpretation of Godzilla, inviting contemporary artists from Japan and around the world to answer the question: "What is Godzilla?"
Since its first appearance in 1954, Godzilla has been depicted in countless films, each portraying the legendary monster through the lens of different directors and societal contexts. This diversity makes Godzilla impossible to define with a single image or concept. Instead, the exhibition will showcase Godzilla as an evolving symbol of each era, captured through various artistic mediums beyond film, including painting, sculpture, and even digital art.
The exhibition, organized by Asahi Shimbun, PARCO, and Toho, promises to be an immersive experience, bringing together diverse global perspectives on this cultural phenomenon. The full list of participating artists will be revealed at a later date, ensuring an exciting lineup of creators interpreting Godzilla in fresh and thought-provoking ways.
Takeshi Yoro, the general producer of the exhibition, shares that Godzilla's enduring power lies in its ability to adapt, reflecting the mood and atmosphere of each era. The exhibition’s goal is to capture this transformation, allowing each artist to present their own version of "the Godzilla." Through their unique visions, new versions of Godzilla will emerge, continuing the legacy of one of cinema’s most enduring symbols.
