The center of Shizuoka City is pretty solidly urban, but you don't have to go far to find a complete escape into nature. Starting from Kiyomizuyama Park a little way east of the downtown core, Yatsuyama has several kilometers of hiking trails, the natural setting almost completely unspoilt. The trails go up gentle slopes, through thick forest and past groves of swaying bamboo, with frequent beautiful views out over the surrounding scenery, forested hills to the north, the ocean to the south.

Hiking Yatsuyama in Shizuoka
Escape the city into some beautiful natural scenery

The hills stretch away into the distance

Green on all sides

Somewhere to sit and rest

There are lots of bamboo trees

Shizuoka City, surrounded by forested hills

The foliage alongside the path can get pretty tall

Even trail markers are cute

Rough steps lead up

A view out over the city and hills

Somewhere to take a drink break

A map of the many different trails

Looking south over the city to the ocean

Rest here while you admire the view

The path heads into thicker forest here

That's some tall bamboo

The start of the trail, from Kiyomizuyama Park
