Close to Hachiman station on the Enshu railway line in central Hamamatsu, Hachimangu is a peaceful, spacious Shinto shrine. Set in expansive grounds full of tall, leafy trees, but not far from the downtown area, it's a nice place to escape the bustle of this busy city. Get there at the right time and you might get to see a ceremony taking place, adding to the atmosphere.

This way to the shrine

One of the entrance gates

Decoration on one of the gate's pillars

The approach to the main hall

A big lantern on the grounds

Wash your hands here

A lion guarding the shrine from intruders

Lucky (or unlucky) fortunes tied up

Big lanterns for a small side shrine

This komainu guardian dog lost the tip of his ear defending the shrine

The shrine halls are surrounded by trees

Banners line the way

Prayer-boards are sheltered from rain, but not from sun

Around the grounds there are a handful of big stones like this one
