About Takeo

Located in the western part of Saga Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Takeo City is an onsen town renowned for its historic onsen, innovative library, and rich cultural heritage. With a history spanning over 1,300 years, Takeo Onsen's soothing waters, known for their silky smooth feel, have attracted visitors for centuries. Today, both tourists and locals can enjoy these therapeutic waters at several public bathhouses centered around the Takeo Onsen Tower Gate which stands as a symbol of the town.

Another highlight of Takeo is the Takeo City Library. Originally a standard municipal library, it underwent a significant transformation in 2013 to become a model for future libraries. This modern architectural marvel not only offers a vast collection of books but also houses a cozy coffeehouse. Takeo is also renowned for its ceramics, with around 90 ceramic studios contributing to the city’s vibrant arts scene.

Takeo City offers a variety of culinary delights. It is famous for its Champon, especially in the Kitagata area, known as Kitagata Champon Street. Champon is a noodle dish similar to ramen that has a chicken and pork soup base and is filled with ingredients like pork, seafood, and vegetables. Additionally, Takeo is home to the premium Wakakusu pork, prized for its tender texture.
