Yokohama Landmark Tower & Sky Garden
Todd WojnowskiOfficially Japan’s tallest building, the Landmark Tower is an enormous skyscraper that is home to a beautiful observation deck..
Yokohama Landmark Tower, located in the Minato Mirai district of Yokohama, is the second tallest building in Japan! This impressive 70-floor skyscraper, completed in 1993, stands 296.3 meters tall and is an unmistakable staple in the area’s skyline. The tower is visually intriguing with defined corner posts and a slightly flared base; the building is an engineering feat with a flexible structure that absorbs earthquake shocks. Amazingly, these earthquake building tactics are similar to the ones used to construct traditional Japanese multi-story pagodas.
Yokohama Landmark Tower is a hub of memorable activities with destinations such as the Sky Garden Observatory, Yokohama Royal Park Hotel, and Yokohama Landmark Plaza.
Sky Garden Observatory, located on the 69th floor of Yokohama Landmark Tower, offers guests incredible 360-degree panoramic views of the city, Yokohama Port, Tokyo Bay, Tokyo City, and Mount Fuji on clear days. The expansive composition of organized skyscrapers, roadways, water, and sky meet at the distant horizon to create a mesmerizing perspective of city life. At night, the scene transforms into a dazzling sea of lights and color. The ride up to the observatory is a thrilling journey as the tower is home to Japan’s fastest elevator, which ascends 69 floors in under 40 seconds!
Apart from the spectacular views, the 69th floor also features the Sky Cafe. Guests can enjoy a number of delicious options, such as white-and-blue soft serve ice cream and sky float drinks that are colored to match the clouds and sky. Visitors can even have a bottle of beer as they drink in the amazing views.
Admission to the Sky Garden Observatory costs 1,000 JPY for adults, 800 JPY for high school students and seniors (65+), 500 JPY for elementary and junior high school students, and 200 JPY for children under four years old. The floor’s normal business hours are from 10:00 to 21:00 with the last admission at 20:30.
Discover Sky Garden ObservatoryFor a unique stay, visitors can lodge at the Yokohama Royal Park Hotel. The hotel’s rooms occupy the 52nd to 67th floors of the tower, providing guests incredible city views regardless of the level. The hotel is a truly luxurious stay with a plethora of activities above the skyline, including a traditional tea room on the 65th floor, a fitness club, and a rejuvenating spa. The hotel also has no shortage of delicious eats with French, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine options, as well as bars, cafes, and even a cake shop! Yokohama Royal Park Hotel is a stunning building, perfect for events, weddings, or simply an incredible stay in Yokohama.
Discover Yokohama Royal Park HotelYokohama Landmark Plaza is a five-story mall situated at the base of Landmark Tower and is connected to the skyscraper’s first, third, and fifth floors. The plaza is an exciting collection of restaurants and shops featuring local and international brands, making it a fashion lover’s dream. The plaza’s open floor-plan, abundance of natural lighting, and white-stone decor elevate visitors’ shopping experience and make it a spot for public promotions and performances. During Christmas time, the plaza embraces the festive season by displaying an 8-meter tall Swarovski crystal tree and hosting a snowfall event as well as a light-and-music show.
Art enthusiasts can also check out Moku Moku Waku Waku Yokohama Yo Yo, which is a twisted stainless steel art sculpture featured at the base of the Landmark Tower that is reminiscent of a roller coaster. While in the area, shoppers can also visit the nearby Queen’s Tower A, which includes additional shops and restaurants and the Yokohama Art Museum.
Yokohama Landmark Plaza is open from 11:00 to 20:00 for shopping and 11:00 to 22:00 for dining.
