Okinawa has been named the world's second top destination on Expedia's Unpack'26 list, which highlights where traveler interest is set to soar in the coming year. The list is powered by real-time search data from Expedia's app and website, and spotlights trending destinations that are capturing global attention for 2026.
This year, Expedia also introduced its new Smart Travel Health Check, a framework inspired by the World Travel & Tourism Council's report on sustainable destination management. Some destinations on the list received a check mark to show alignment with WTTC's six actions for responsible tourism, and this is something the JapanTravel team is passionate about, too.
The Expedia website outlined some of their top recommendations for a visit to Okinawa, including a visit to Shuri Castle (still under reconstruction after the 2019 fire), the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum, or the historic pottery district of Tsuboya. Naha's Kokusai Dori was also mentioned as a hub for local food and shopping, while the Peace Memorial Museum offers a sobering but important reflection on the island's World War II history.
Additionally, be sure to explore our site's dedicated Okinawa page. It showcases some of the region's upcoming events, along with places to stay, things to do, and spots for a bite to eat.
