Taketomi is one of the islands in the Yaeyama island chain, the southernmost islands of the Japanese archipelago. While the island is known for its white coral roads, tiled houses and carts pulled by water buffalo, it is also a paradise for flower lovers. You can find many species here, from the wide-petaled hibiscus (once planted by outhouses to purify the air) to the delicate orchid and many more in between. Despite some serious research, I am lacking the names of some of these so if you're good with flowers, please leave any corrections in the comments!

I think the red "peacock flower or butterfly bush" flower's name is spider hibiscus (Hibiscus schizopetalus) and the yellow one which look like mirabilis jalapa is golden trumpet (Allamanda cathartica).

Thank you, Olga! It's funny, I wasn't really a flower lover until I moved to Japan. ;) But yes, I felt a bit embarrassed myself posting some of these photos without knowing their names. And I searched as thoroughly as I could, both online and in some reference books. I hope someone else can help!

Mandy, here in Japan they have so many beautiful flowers I have never seen before. And I feel I'm becoming a bit of a flower lover myself. I feel happy when I see an unusual one!
