More Fun Coming to Oita for Sanrio Fans

Harmonyland is getting a major makeover

If you're heading to Kyushu soon, Oita Prefecture has something exciting on the horizon. Sanrio is beginning a major makeover of its long-running Harmonyland theme park in Hiji Town, turning it into a full entertainment resort that brings together Oita's scenery, hot springs, and relaxed local vibe with the world of Hello Kitty and friends.

Harmonyland has been part of the area since 1991, and the new resort plan builds on the already strong partnership between Sanrio, Oita Prefecture, and Hiji Town. You may have already spotted hints of the collaboration, including the rebranding of Oita Hello Kitty Airport and the Harmony Liner bus that connects the airport, Kitsuki Station, and the park. The next stage takes this cooperation further by inviting locals, fans, and visitors from around the world to help shape the future of the resort.

A central idea in the plan is the Park in the Sky concept. Harmonyland sits on hilly ground, and Sanrio wants to use that layout to create wider views and better comfort year round. Plans include a large roof structure to protect guests from heat and rain, new mobility systems such as ropeways and electric transport, refreshed attractions, and a new hotel with views over the mountains and Beppu Bay. It aims to offer a theme park experience that stays enjoyable in any season.

A strong focus on accessibility runs through the project, and the goal is a place where guests of all ages and abilities can share the same experiences and feel completely at ease. For travelers exploring Kyushu, this new chapter of Harmonyland looks set to become a memorable stop that mixes nature, character charm, and the warm spirit of Oita.

Getting there

Harmonyland is approximately a 30-minute drive from either Beppu Station or Oita Airport. If you're headed to Harmonyland via public transportation, the closest stations are either Kitsuki Station or Yokoku Station on the JR Nippo Main Line. From either station, Harmonyland is approximately a 10 minute taxi ride away.
