Renowned travel guide publisher Lonely Planet is known for providing expert recommendations on top spots to visit around the globe, and they recently offered insights into their 22 best destinations to visit across Asia. Setouchi and Tokyo were highlighted as two standout locations in Japan, and each place offers a unique travel experience.
Setouchi
Nestled along Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, the Setouchi region is celebrated for its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Perhaps best known for the Shimanami Kaido—one of the country's best-known cycling routes—the area has plenty more to offer. Some visitors opt to base themselves out of Hiroshima to explore this part of Japan, others choose smaller towns like Onomichi, but irrespective of where you stay there are a myriad of attractions to explore.
One of them is the upcoming Setouchi Art Triennale, held every three years. The next iteration of the event takes place in 2025, so the timing for a visit couldn't be better. It's split into spring, summer, and autumn sessions, with specific dates available on the official website linked above.
Additionally, this guide on our site covers some "secret" spots in the Setouchi region—it's worth a read if you are looking for some more niche destinations to explore.
Tokyo
A destination that really needs no introduction at this point, Tokyo was praised by the Lonely Planet team for everything from its contemporary art scene to futuristic technology and Michelin-star dining. Some of their suggestions for places to explore included the Tokyo National Museum, the historic Imperial Palace (just a stone's throw away from the Japan Travel office!) and Asakusa's Senso-ji Temple. The bars and restaurants of popular drinking area Golden Gai were also mentioned, alongside the ever-popular teamLab Borderless, Tsukiji Market, and Rikugien Garden.
A good reminder, though—Japan truly has something to offer in every corner of the country. If you're looking for ideas on how to beat the crowds, explore our guide to responsible travel here.
