Kasuga Taisha Shrine

Deer, wisteria and 3000 lanterns

Kasuga Taisha Shrine, located in Nara Park and sandwiched between the huge temple complexes of Kofuku-ji and Todai-ji Temples, is one of the icons of Nara. Walking through the long, wide approach, we see lots of deer pleasantly playing around and grazing on the grass, people reading, eating and drinking, or just enjoying a slow time. In May, the sweet fragrance of wisteria fills the precincts of this shrine. Especially, Manyo Botanical Garden within the shrine, is pleasing to the eye with its gorgeous flowers. In summer and winter, 3000 dedicated lanterns are lit as a memorial service to all our ancestors (万灯籠 Manto-ro). It takes place on August 14,15 and February 3 every year.
