The first leg of this hike in Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park starts at the Ebino Kogen Museum Center and rounds Byakushi Pond, a shallow, roundish crater lake. This section includes forested mountainsides inhabited by deer and birds, seasonal flowers, shrubs and grasses, and spectacular views of the clear blue pond and surrounding volcanoes. Following the circular path clockwise will soon bring you to the next stage, Rokukannon Pond.

Gorgeous scenery! Now I’m getting very curious about a getaway to Miyazaki Prefecture.

I couldn't spot the deer on that photo. But on other photos it is adorable!

She's about 25 m from the camera in that photo, hard to see. The light brown spot just left of center. I almost walked right by her! Keep fairly quiet and your eyes open while hiking, looking away from the trail, and there's a good chance you'll see one.

Thank you! These were actually the first wild deer I've seen in the daytime in Japan. I watched them right from the path for a good 10 minutes!
