Did you know that Japan is famous not only for sake but also for whiskey? In 2014 alone, the Nikka Whiskey Distillery won eight Gold medal awards in different categories for its products. The Miyagikyo Distillery offers free tours (in Japanese) and you will have the opportunity to sample some of its products. While you are there, I suggest you pop into the shop and have a look around. Apart from the wine and whiskey, there are chocolates and cakes that you won't find elsewhere. There are free shuttles to and from the Sakunami train station. If you have some free time, why not learn about the history of whiskey in Japan?

Salima, even better yet - come for a visit and you can sample them yourself before choosing one to buy ;)

I'd like to sample the apple wine, too :)
Olga, they also sell an "Apple Wine Cake" in the shop. Of course, I had to get one!

Fun place in a natural setting. And easy access with public transportation as you mention.
Yes Justin, there are free shuttles to and from the station. Also, when you get to the distillery, they give you a schedule of the shuttle times so you can enjoy your stroll around the grounds without worrying about missing the shuttles.
