The Spirit of Kyoto

The many faces of Japan's ancient capital

Kyoto is the city that one “must see” in Japan, so I’ve been told. When I travel, I try to avoid the most touristy places as I enjoy quiet places much more, but I decided to visit Kyoto anyway.

I found that Kyoto was much smaller than Tokyo or Osaka. Visiting only a few places of interest was my plan, so I decided to walk to Kinkakuji Temple from Gion Shijo. It took me two and a half hours, so I quickly learned that Kyoto wasn’t small city at all! The grounds of Kinkakuji Temple were really crowded, so I had to wait until I could get in front and take the photos. If you go to Kyoto, be prepared as there are many people that want to see that city as much as you do! On the next day, I decided to purchase a day pass and traveled everywhere in Kyoto by bus.

Kyoto is rich with temples, shrines, souvenir and gift shops, people dressed in kimono and other “attractions”, but there are also many places that are rather quiet, where you can just rest - like at the embankment of Kamogawa River.

Unfortunately, my time was limited and spent only three days in Kyoto. I’d like to come back some day.
