Gorgeous, intricate, beautiful with a practical purpose, the examples at the Autumn exhibition at the Seishu Netsuke Art Museum deserve to be seen. Crafted by Motomasa Kurita, some of the pieces are inspired by traditional tanka poetry, while others draw on scenes from nature or the artist's own fantasies. The museum (a converted townhouse with a traditional Kyoto-style garden) is across the street from the Mibudera temple and easily accessible by bus. A visit is the perfect way to while away an hour or two when visiting Kyoto.
