You don't have to venture far from ultra-modern Kyoto station to find a pocket of traditional beauty. The Shosei-en Garden, an extension of nearby Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, lies a mere seven minute stroll from the frenetic train station but offers a calm world of ponds, tea houses and stone lanterns. It may not be as noteworthy as some traditional gardens further afield but if you're staying in the area, this is a lovely - and little-visited - site.
