With an excellent location just three minutes walk from Kyoto Station, Nishikiro is a small inn owned and run by a friendly local family. Of the ten rooms, three have their own bath and toilet, the others share facilities. Although accommodations are simple, the inn is very clean and is perfect for someone on a budget who wants an authentic Japanese experience. English is spoken.

Nishikiro Ryokan near Kyoto Station
Simple, reasonable, foreigner-friendly inn

The entrance to the ryokan is very inviting.
Check-in time is 3:00pm, check out time is 10:00am. Night owls should choose other accommodations since doors are locked at 11:30pm.
There is a lovely garden and fish pond in the very center of the ryokan.
I stayed in room 'Musashi', with shared bath & toilet.
The rooms are equipped with only the basics, but are clean and comfortable.
In operation for over 50 years, the ryokan has a lot of charm.
Guests who do not have bathing facilities in their room use these sinks in the hallway.
There are both western and Japanese style shared toilets.
This is the ladies bath. The public baths can be used between 4:30pm and 11:30pm. Showers can also be used in the morning.
View from second floor room over looking the narrow alley in front of the ryokan. Since it is very narrow, there is almost no car traffic.
The 'Cafe & Dining Fleur', popular for their dessert pancakes, sits right beside the ryokan.

That's a fantastic suggestion! Always glad to get some tips on Kyoto, especially on accomodations with an authentic flair. Many thanks.
