Jikishian Hermitage in Okusaga

A place for women to bring their worries and problems

On November 15th in 2012, I visited Jikishian Temple in Kyoto. I arrived too early for the peak of autumn leaves, but the maple trees were already changing color.

Jikishian Temple is located in the northern part of Sagano, Kyoto. People often think this is a nunnery, but it's not. In the main hall, there is a room where you can write down all your troubles in a kind of notebook. A counseling session for various worries is also available here.

Many people, especially women, visit here to write down their troubles, and there are currently well over 5000 notebooks full of their writings. The temple has thus earned the alias, 'Shelter for troubled women'.
