When gazing down from above on to the somewhat un-imposing peak of Mt Aso, it is hard to believe that not only is this one of the most active volcanoes in all of Japan, but its also one of the largest calderas in the world. That is until you gaze across, and realize that the mountains on the other side of the vast network of farms and towns that is the Aso valley, are the walls of this super volcano's crater. That is when the sheer size and power of this mountain finally grip your conscious. An afternoon spent meandering through its many colors and shades is pure magic.
