Yokohama's Chinatown has two quiet temples (mausoleums) of worship nestled in among the throngs of restaurants, visitors, and general cheerful chaos. Kanteibyo enshrines General Guan Yu, who is a famous character in the Chinese historical classic "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". The temple is exquisitely decorated and I was surprised and delighted to find pillars at the front of the temple that include many carvings from the "Three Kingdoms" story. Kanteibyo was established in 1862 but has had to be rebuilt numerous times due to earthquakes and fires. It is the most important spiritual, cultural, and social site for Yokohama's large Chinese community.
