Kamakura is an attractive, peaceful place to visit at any time of year, but even more so during cherry-blossom season. Towards the end of March the trees around the temples and along the main road burst into life, adorning the town with bright splashes of color that bring out the beauty of the sights, as well as festive crowds enjoying the warm weather that the arrival of the flowers has heralded.

The serene Daibutsu contemplating a cherry-blossom tree

This building behind the Daibutsu is shaded by the trees

The flowers' blooming attracts legions of amateur photographers

The main approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu becomes a bright, festive avenue of pinkness

It's not only human visitors that enjoy the trees

Trees hang over the pond at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu as if the flowers are weighing down their branches

And there are more trees at the far end of the pond

The artist in me likes to frame the scenery with close-ups of the flowers
