It’s not Japanese, but it’s definitely worth a try if you haven’t been to Australia. And if you’ve followed my Japan travel blog from the start, you'll know that bills restaurant is my all-time favorite breakfast spot in Japan.
Australian chef, Bill Granger, brought the famous creamy scrambled eggs and fluffy ricotta pancakes recipe to the Kanagawa region and I just can’t get enough of them both. That is until I came face to face with their berry berry pancakes with berry butter. Offered only at the Yokohama location, this ‘bills Classics’ item is such a delight and worth every minute of standing in line anxiously awaiting a table.
bills in Yokohama is located at the historical Red Brick Warehouse (Akarenga Soko in Japanese) in Building No.2. It is the second location to open outside of Sydney, Australia. Designed using elements of Japanese and European architecture, Building No.2 is made up of some 3,180,000 bricks & 560 tons of steel; so beautiful to photograph any time of the day. The glass terrace of bills overlooks the ocean and is a charming addition to the 102-year old building. If you’re lucky you’ll be able to see a visiting cruise ship along the pier.
Once inside, the modern yet cozy fresh feel awakens your spirit and puts a smile on your face. I couldn’t help from people watching as I sat at my table. Are they as excited about being here as much as I am? Of course! There was a whole lot of picture taking and instant uploading to their favorite social media application, I’m sure.
The berry berry pancakes with berry butter (¥1,400)….be still my heart! The magical berry batter recipe turns into three hotcakes perfectly golden and topped off with powdered sugar and seasonal berries such as strawberries, blueberries & raspberries. It was so delicious my order suddenly became a shared plate and was all gone too fast. Luckily, we had ordered the full aussie breakfast (¥1,800) that included the most amazing scrambled eggs I’ve ever tasted in my life, bacon, pork & fennel sausage, roast tomato, mushrooms and toast. As usual, we ordered the mozzarella & sage toasted sandwich (¥1,100) and paired our meals with bills hot chocolate with valrhona chocolate (¥700) & bills daily greens juice (¥700), a blend of green apple, cucumber, spinach, chia seeds and young coconut. Once again, we had a winning breakfast of champions!
If you’re in the area, try visiting the Shichirigahama branch of bills overlooking the beach in Kamakura. The Odaiba location is situated at Decks Tokyo Beach for an awesome view of Rainbow Bridge.
I had the organic free-range eggs and whole wheat toast with avocado as well as the fruit platter - everything was great! The coffee also was wonderful :)
