When I tell people I'm from New Zealand, they often comment about my country's beautiful scenery. However, Japan's scenery is just as lovely. Recently I had the pleasure of driving around Lake Miyagase in Kanagawa. The hillsides around the lake were covered with a mix of evergreen cedars and deciduous trees that were still showing some autumn color even though it was already December. It was so beautiful I was a little frustrated because there were very few places to stop and take photos! This man-made lake was created when Miyagase Dam was built, and supplies water to Yokohama and Tokyo.

Autumn at Lake Miyagase
Beautiful scenery at a man-made lake in Kanagawa

By Cathy Cawood

Pampas grass stands out against the blue hills

An island of deciduous trees

Beautiful reflections on the still water

There are two bridges across the lake

Low cloud resting on the treetops

A motorcycle zooms over a bridge decorated with rainbows

I love the texture and colors of forested hills in autumn

The water reflects the hills, and turns from blue to green and purple in the shadows

Although the peak of autumn was past, there was still some color in early December

The rainbow is cute, but I would rather see the scenery. I wonder why the bridge is so high?

There were a few boats on the lake

Japan has beautiful scenery!

What a beautiful area, Cathy! It's been too long since I've been up to Yamanashi and I've only really explored the wineries. ;)
I have yet to do that, but I really want to!
