Mt. Kintoki is a great hike, as well as a culturally important mountain. It is the legendary home of Kintaro, a magical boy. There are many trails to access the mountain, and some of them can be pretty challenging. [Editor's note: no longer offered — we recommend the Hakone Free Pass] Additionally, there is a bus pass offered by the Hakone Tozan bus that covers all of the bus stops with access to the mountain. At 1,300 yen per person, it is a good deal if you are planning on ascending from most of the trailheads.

A Spring Hike up Mt. Kintoki
A great day hike with views of Mt. Fuji and Hakone

The view of the surrounding mountains is really breathtaking

The paths are well marked

View of Mt. Fuji from the Otome pass trail

Parts of the trail can be fairly challenging

But other parts can be quite enchanting

Packing a bento is a good idea, although there are two mountain shops that sell simple food and souvenirs

The top has some great areas for a picnic overlooking Hakone

There is also a Kintoki Shrine at the base of one of the trails
