The Sankara Hotel & Spa, Yakushima Island

A little piece of paradise

Sixty kilometres southwest of Kyushu’s southernmost tip lies the island of Yakushima. Full of thousand-year old cedars gathered in mysterious virgin forests with a host of animals, from endangered loggerhead sea turtles to monkeys, the island is often referred to as the Galapagos of East Asia.

Yakushima’s secret heaven

A destination known more for its trekking through ancient forests that have been recognised by UNESCO sine 1993 as a Natural Site of World Heritage, Yakushima might not be the first place you would think of as a luxury destination. But the Sankara Hotel & Spa, located on the southern side of the island, is perfect paradise, and a treat after a hard day of trekking.

Local production, local consumption

The Sankara follows a special concept when it comes to its cuisine, "local production for local consumption." They take the local, seasonal island ingredients and create the finest dining experience. Offering both Japanese and French cuisine, Sankara’s policy of sourcing local produce from local growers and suppliers means you’ll enjoy the freshest and sometimes most unique ingredients from Yakushima. It really does create a most memorable cuisine experience.

There's also no noise, no children allowed under the age of 13 and no hassle … just peace and tranquillity, making the Sankara Hotel and Spa the perfect get away.

I'd love to escape to there right now. But I have four kids under thirteen (under eleven!) so I guess I am going to have to wait a decade or so!
