Kagawa's Ritsurin Garden is considered one of Japan's best gardens for several reasons, including its scenic beauty and historical significance. Set against the backdrop of Mount Shiun, the garden features several ponds, beautifully landscaped hills, and thousands of trees to appreciate.
That last point – the plethora of trees on the grounds – is a great reason to visit the garden during the fall season when the leaves change colors. To celebrate the stunning foliage an autumn illumination event will be held for 10 days, allowing visitors to enjoy a picturesque after-dark stroll. Along with the illuminated leaves, the event will include a variety of additional activities and events which are outlined below.
Nighttime operation of the Nanko Tour Japanese Boat
(Reservations required + additional fee applies)
Taking to the water provides a unique vantage point to enjoy all of the seasonal color at Ritsurin, and you can do just that at Nanko Lake, the larger of the south garden's two lakes. Reservations need to be made ahead of time via this website, and an additional fee applies – adults are priced at 620 JPY, and children (elementary and junior high school students) are priced at 310 JPY.
Music and dance performances
The event also allows visitors to connect with Japan's culture via a range of traditional music and dance performances on select dates, featuring instruments like the shamisen and bamboo flute.
Sanuki Lantern Night
There will be displays of Sanuki lanterns a traditional craft, and hand-held lanterns will be distributed to visitors wishing to explore the garden grounds with warm light guiding their way.
