Tono's Hachimangu Shrine is one of the most impressive and easily accessible shrines in Tono City. Hachimangu Shrines are dedicated to Hachiman, the kami of war, which used to be particularly popular among the leading military clans of the past. As you enter under the Torii gate you'll immediately feel a sense of serenity as you make your way up the long path that leads to the main hall. There is a purification trough located under the Torii gate, Komainu guardian dogs at the base of the main hall steps, and a large stone courtyard surrounded by lush foliage and Ema boards. The relaxing grounds and beautiful gardens make this a pleasant visit whether you're there to worship or simply take in the beauty of Japan's culture. Tono Hachimangu Shrine is located off Route 340, five minutes drive from JR Tono Station.
