Each year, the heart of Sapporo bursts into color and rhythm with the Sapporo August Festival. This lively event brings two days of Bon Odori dancing, live music, local food, and warm community spirit to Hokkaido’s brief but beautiful summer.
Born in 2015 and inspired by post-2011 recovery efforts in Fukushima, the festival is known for its giant patchwork furoshiki cloths spread across the plaza, symbolizing togetherness and citizen participation. Festivalgoers slip into yukata and join the circle dances, including the original “Sapporo August Festival Ondo,” all set to live performances by the Sapporo August Festival Special Big Band and guest artists. Expect a fun mix of jazz, improvisation, and traditional festival beats.

A standout feature is “Orchestra SAPPORO!”, an open improv ensemble that anyone can join. Bring an instrument (or anything that makes noise) and add your sound to a spontaneous community symphony.
Beyond the dancing, visitors can savor treats from a variety of food trucks, from gelato to local fried specialties, alongside cold drinks perfect for the summer heat. The festival also spills into Sapporo’s underground walkway with booths, displays, and chances to explore more of the city’s creative side.

If you do plan on attendng, please note the festival hours differ each day:
- Friday 25th July: 3pm - 9pm
- Saturday 26th July: 12pm - 8pm
