Honzawa Ranch Observation Deck

A perfect place to take in Hokkaido's vast nature.

Expansive horizons define East Hokkaido—a region rich in nature, sprawling and untouched by the world of humans. Across the seasons, East Hokkaido’s landscapes bloom and wither in vibrant, wild colors. No matter where you go, these ever-changing scenes are breathtaking, quietly reminding visitors of the beauty found in the natural world.

The Honzawa Ranch Observation Deck is located about 45 minutes by car from Kitami Station. While it may be slightly off the beaten path for most travelers passing through, the drive itself is a scenic journey. It winds through fertile valleys where farmland stretches toward evergreen forests, and crosses the calm surface of Tomisato Lake at the base of Mt. Nikoro. These foothills are home to wildlife such as the majestic Ezo deer and their formidable rival, the brown bear, beneath towering trees alive with birdsong.

As you ascend into the hills, the Honzawa Ranch Observation Deck emerges on a rise overlooking the valley below. Operated by Kitami City, the ranch comes to life in spring and summer, when cows graze on its lush green fields. On clear days, with the clouds parted, the deck offers sweeping views of Akan-Mashu National Park and the mighty Daisetsuzan National Park, and with a bit of luck, you can glimpse the Shiretoko Peninsula.

The weather in Kitami is most cooperative in the summer and makes the Honzawa Ranch Observation Deck perfect for snapping evening sunscapes or green hills under blue skies. The cows at Honzawa Ranch are released into the fields in May, however, it is recommended to keep distance from them as they are in the midst of birthing season and tend to be territorial.

To access the observation tower, after parking your car, you'll follow a short uphill path for five minutes to the tower. As bears are common in these woods, bringing a bear bell or spray is recommended.
