Pikmin Terrace in Miyajima SA

A limited-time collaboration in Hiroshima

For fans of Nintendo, few franchises capture the spirit of exploration quite like Pikmin. First released in 2001, the games invite players to command tiny plant-like creatures who work together to gather treasures, solve puzzles, and navigate colorful landscapes. Loved for their charm and cooperative gameplay, Pikmin have become one of Nintendo's most recognizable characters alongside Mario and Zelda.

Now, travelers in Japan can experience a slice of this whimsical world at Pikmin Terrace, located in the Miyajima Service Area along the Sanyo Expressway in Hiroshima Prefecture.

Please note: the Pikmin Terrace collaboration is a limited-time only event—at the time of writing, the collaboration is due to end on March 31st, 2026.

If you're new to Japan's highways, service areas (known as SA) are destinations in their own right. Unlike simple roadside rest stops elsewhere, Japan's service areas are packed with regional food specialties, gift shops, playgrounds, and even full-scale attractions. They're designed not just as a place to refuel your car, but to give travelers a reason to pause and enjoy the journey.

Miyajima SA takes this concept one step further with its Pikmin collaboration. At Pikmin Terrace, you'll find life-sized statues of the characters in outdoor photo spots, special goods that can't be purchased anywhere else, and even locally inspired Pikmin merchandise, such as Hiroshima-themed snacks and souvenirs. Themed activities and connections to the mobile app Pikmin Bloom add a digital layer to the visit, making it fun for families and game fans alike.

Best of all, you don't even need to be driving on the expressway to enjoy it, since Miyajima SA offers parking and access from outside the toll road. Irrespective of whether you're a longtime Nintendo fan or just curious about Japan's creative roadside culture, Pikmin Terrace is a worthwhile stop on your road trip adventures.
