On Top of Miyajima

Hiking above one of Japan's most famous gates

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the gate at Miyajima is one of the most heavily photographed objects in all of Japan. The real name of the island is Itsukushima, after the shrine that resides there. The giant orange torii (gate), which at high tide appears to be floating, is the biggest drawcard.

Although hundreds of tourists make the ferry ride to this small Island every day, few take the opportunity to explore its network of trails. Most ride to the top via ropeway, snap a few pictures, then ride the ropeway back down, missing out on well maintained trails that traverse their way up to Mount Misen.
