A little way from the centre of Kusatsu, across the road from the Baelz Memorial Hall which commemorates the resort's founder, Kusatsu Farmers' Shop sells a huge range of locally produced food and drinks. There are liqueurs, wines, beers and spirits; cakes, cookies and jams made from a variety of fruits; pickles, sauces and other condiments, beef jerky, bacon jerky, and much, much more. Some of it I couldn't identify, but a lot of the goods are labeled in English as well as Japanese. It's a really good place to pick up gifts for friends and family, and some treats for yourself too.

Kusatsu Farmers' Shop
Load up on tasty local produce
By Peter Sidell
Community writer
Lots of fruit liqueurs
Jam, jam, jam, jam...
Enough noodles to last a few years
I don't rightly know what some of these are
Sauces, dressings, and pickled cabbage, I think
Teas and juices
Of course there's lots of alcohol, be it spirits...
...or beers
Specialties of the town
More dressings and condiments
This is what the shop looks like from outside

Wow, this is really in the middle of nowhere in Gunma. But very mouthwatering line up of local cuisine. Are those bottles of apple juice really priced at JPY1200? They must be pretty special!
It is a bit of a mission to get to Kusatsu - two and a half hours on the train from Ueno, then another half hour on the bus - but it's a very relaxed place and well worth going to. I didn't try the apple juice, but the apricot liqueur was really nice, and I'm still enjoying my pot of avocado wasabi mayonnaise!
