Fukuoka’s skies are set to come alive with color during the Uminaka Kite Flying Festival, held in early April at the Uminonakamichi National Government Seaside Park. From 10am until 4pm on both days of the event, visitors can witness a variety of balloon kites floating above the park’s sweeping landscapes—including the debut of a 50-meter-long whale kite, gliding peacefully over a sea of blooming blue nemophila flowers.

In addition to the spectacle in the sky, families can enjoy a fun kite-making workshop on the park’s Large Lawn Square, where children can design and fly their own colorful creations. The workshop costs 300 JPY per kit and is limited to 80 participants per day, but watching the kites themselves is free.

The venue, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, spans over 350 hectares and features seasonal flower displays, interactive areas like the Animal Forest, and nature-friendly attractions including squirrel monkeys and capybaras. It’s a popular destination year-round for recreation and family fun.

Whether you’re coming for the kites or the flowers, this event is a perfect reason to spend a spring day surrounded by the great outdoors.

*Please note: the event will be canceled in case of rain, so we recommend checking the forecast before attending.

Getting there

Uminonakamichi Seaside Park is located around 10 minutes on foot from JR Saitozaki Station.
