To celebrate half a century of all things Hello Kitty, the popular "When I Change, Kitty Changes Too" exhibition is visiting the Fukuoka Art Museum after successful stints at the Tokyo National Museum and the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum. The event is said to be the largest-ever display of Hello Kitty-themed merchandise, original videos, and collaborative works with artists.

The exhibition showcases a fun and nostalgic look at Hello Kitty’s evolution over the past five decades, with visitors able to explore how her fashion and style have changed throughout the years. Merchandise like handbags, mugs, and cameras will be on display, really giving some perspective as to how far the "Hello Kitty effect" has reached. The exhibition also features new artwork by 30 artists under the theme "Me and Kitty," offering a fresh take on the beloved character.

If you're looking for a souvenir to commemorate your visit with, there will be a range of unique items – everything from event-exclusive plush toys to senbei (rice crackers) imprinted with Hello Kitty on them.

Also, if you can't make the Fukuoka event, never fear—the exhibition will head to the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art from late September through until early December of 2025.

Getting there

The Fukuoka Art Museum is located around 10 minutes on foot from Ohori Park Station, which is served by the Fukuoka City Subway's Kuko Line.
