Strolling Mt. Asuwa in Early Autumn

Enjoy a casual hike appreciating autumn colors

One sunny day in mid October I took a stroll on Mt. Asuwa. I usually start my hike from the foot of the mountain and drop by at Kurotatsu, Fujishima or Asuwa shrines (there are many shrines on this mountain), but this time I drove halfway up the mountain, parked my car and began the hike from there. After appreciating a clear view of Fukui City stretching below from the observation deck, I climbed the short flight of stone stairs leading to Shokon-sha Shrine, which enshrines people who died in wars since 1864. The leaves were turning colors and some of them had already fallen to the ground. As a whole the scenery was so beautiful, I forgot about my planned hike and kept taking pictures. When I came to, the sun was already setting and I had to drive down the mountain quickly...to run away from possibly hungry bears!
